Restroom Stall Dimensions: Standard and ADA Handicap Stalls

Whether you're designing a new commercial restroom from the ground up or working through a renovation, stall dimensions are one of the most critical factors to get right. Bathroom partitions, stall doors, and the space around them aren't just about aesthetics. They're governed by building codes and accessibility standards that protect the comfort, safety, and dignity of every user.

At Restroom Stalls and All, we supply everything needed to complete commercial restroom projects, from toilet partitions and stall dividers to accessories like dispensers, grab bars, changing stations, and hardware. This guide breaks down the key dimensional standards you need to know before your next project.

Understanding ADA Standards

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) sets the most widely referenced guidelines for restroom design in the United States. While ADA dimensions are legally required only for wheelchair-accessible stalls, the principles behind them, including adequate clearance, proper fixture placement, and safe maneuvering space, serve as a smart baseline for any commercial restroom layout.

ADA standards address seat heights, door widths, the clearance needed around fixtures, and the positioning of grab bars and gripping surfaces along side walls. Even in stalls that aren't designated accessible, designing with these principles in mind leads to more functional, inclusive spaces. Non-compliance carries real consequences, with fines reaching $75,000 for a first violation and $150,000 for each violation after that.

Standard Stall Dimensions

For non-ADA commercial restroom stalls, the typical dimensions are:

  • Stall door: 24 inches wide, 58 inches high
  • Stall interior: 36 inches wide by 60 inches deep

Stall depth can range from 48 to 78 inches depending on the overall restroom layout. This variability matters most when accommodating inward-swinging doors, which must open completely without encroaching on the toilet or the user's space. Getting depth right is just as important as width when it comes to usability and code compliance.

ADA Handicap Stall Requirements

Every public restroom is legally required to include at least one ADA-compliant accessible stall. These stalls must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Door width: 34 inches minimum

  • Interior width: 60 inches turning radius

  • Interior depth: 60 inches minimum

  • Ambulatory stall: 36 inches minimum width, 60 inches minimum depth, 32-34 inches minimum door width

  • Door swing: Outward-swinging to preserve interior maneuvering space

  • Wheelchair clearance: Sufficient space for approach, transfer, and exit

  • Grab bars: Properly positioned along the side wall and behind the toilet for support and stability

In many installations, accessible stalls are located at the end of a partition row and built wider than the minimum, sometimes exceeding 100 inches, to provide maximum maneuverability for wheelchair users without compromising the experience for other users.

Designing Restrooms That Work for Everyone

Restroom design is about far more than fitting fixtures into a floor plan. Proper stall dimensions, compliant clearances, and thoughtfully placed hardware all contribute to a space that functions well, meets code, and serves every person who walks through the door.
