Toilet Partition Mounting Styles
Commercial toilet partitions install in four mounting styles: floor mounted overhead braced, floor mounted, ceiling hung, and floor to ceiling anchored. The right style depends on what the building structure can carry, how hard the restroom gets used, and the look the design calls for. Restroom Stalls and All supplies all four mounting styles in five partition materials, with pricing through our Instant Quote tool and installation across the Southeast.
Floor mounted overhead braced is the most widely specified toilet partition mounting style because the continuous headrail adds rigidity without requiring structural support above the ceiling.
Overhead Braced Toilet Partitions
Overhead braced toilet partitions anchor their pilasters to the floor and tie the tops together with a continuous aluminum headrail. That headrail is what makes this the default choice: it stiffens the whole partition run, tolerates ordinary variation in walls and floors, and asks nothing of the ceiling structure. If a project does not have a reason to choose another style, it is usually specified overhead braced.
All five of our partition materials are available overhead braced, including solid plastic, where the headrail carries the extra panel weight comfortably.
Floor Mounted Toilet Partitions
Floor mounted toilet partitions anchor at the floor only, with no headrail overhead. The result is a cleaner sightline and a more open feel, which is why the style shows up in office buildings and other design led restrooms. The tradeoff is structural: without a headrail, the floor connection does all the work, so this style needs a structural floor that can take secure anchorage at every pilaster, and it rewards rigid panel materials and heavier pilaster construction.
Ceiling Hung Toilet Partitions
Ceiling hung toilet partitions suspend their pilasters from structural steel above the finished ceiling, leaving the floor completely clear. That clear floor is the entire argument, and it is a strong one in the right building: cleaning crews can machine wash the floor without working around pilasters, which is why airports, stadiums and healthcare facilities specify ceiling hung partitions. The requirement to plan for is overhead: the steel above the ceiling has to be sized and located for the partition loads, which makes this style easiest to specify in new construction or a full renovation.
Floor to Ceiling Toilet Partitions
Floor to ceiling partitions anchor at both the floor and the ceiling structure, which makes them the most rigid and abuse resistant of the four styles. They are the choice for restrooms that take deliberate punishment. Full specifications for this style live on our toilet partitions page.
Which Materials Pair with Which Mounting Style?
- Overhead braced: Works with all five materials, including solid plastic. Requires floor anchors at each pilaster, with no ceiling work.
- Floor mounted: Best with rigid panels such as phenolic, stainless steel and powder coated steel. Requires a structural floor with secure anchorage at every pilaster.
- Ceiling hung: Metal and phenolic panels are the common specification. Requires structural steel above the finished ceiling, sized for partition loads.
- Floor to ceiling: Works with solid plastic, phenolic and metal panels. Requires anchorage at both the floor and overhead structure.
Every material has a dedicated product page with panel construction details: powder coated steel, stainless steel, solid plastic, phenolic black core, phenolic color thru and moisture guard laminate. Urinal partitions use the same materials and mounting systems, so screens between urinals can match the stalls.
What Structural Support Does Each Mounting Style Require?
Overhead braced and floor mounted styles need a floor that can take anchors at each pilaster, with the overhead braced headrail relieving how much rigidity that floor connection must provide on its own. Ceiling hung partitions move the entire load overhead and need structural steel above the finished ceiling. Floor to ceiling partitions need both ends of that equation. In every case, the mounting decision is cheapest when it is made while the structure can still be adjusted.
Accessible stall layouts apply to every mounting style equally.
