A JL model number has four digits. The first two give the tub size, the third gives the series and the last gives the mounting and trim. A C1017 is a 10-1/2 x 24 x 6 in tub (10), Ambassador steel (1), semi-recessed with 3 in rolled trim (7).
| Last digit | Mounting | Trim | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Recessed | 3/8 in flat trim | C1015 |
| 6 | Semi-recessed | 1-1/2 in square trim | C1016 |
| 7, 2 or 8 | Semi-recessed | Rolled trim, 2-1/2 to 4-1/2 in | C1017, C1012, C1018 |
| 4 | Trimless | None; set before the wall finish | C1014 |
| 3 | Surface | None; hangs on the wall | C1013 |
| First two digits | Inside tub (in) | Holds |
|---|---|---|
| 81 | 9 x 18 x 5-1/2 | 2.5 to 6 lb |
| 18 | 10-1/2 x 24 x 5-1/2 | 2.5 to 6 lb |
| 10 | 10-1/2 x 24 x 6 | 2.5 to 10 lb |
| 20 | 12 x 27 x 7-3/4 | Up to 20 lb |
| 30 | 16 x 32 x 7-3/4 | Up to 20 lb, larger tub |
| 40 | 20 x 27 x 7-3/4 | Two extinguishers |
Which door style and glazing should you choose?
- Full View (F, G): one full-height window; G adds a Saf-T-Lok.
- Horizontal Duo (D, E) and Vertical Duo (V, W): the window is split into two panels; E and W add a Saf-T-Lok.
- Small Window with Saf-T-Lok (B10): a small view window in a locking door.
- Solid (S21, L22): no glazing; L22 adds a Saf-T-Lok.
Glazed doors come in clear acrylic (code 10, standard), clear safety glass (18), bronze acrylic (15) or gray acrylic (16). The full part number is C plus the model plus the door and glazing code, for example C1017F10.
When do you need an FX2 fire-rated cabinet?
Choose FX2 when the cabinet goes into a fire-rated wall. JL Industries lists its FX2 cabinets as a UL listed membrane penetration firestop system for walls up to 2 hours (UL 1479). The part number ends in FX2, for example C1017F10FX2. Surface cabinets do not penetrate the wall, so they have no FX2 version. Confirm the wall assembly with the architect or the authority having jurisdiction.
For mounting, finish and size advice across both brands, read the fire extinguisher cabinet buying guide.
